May 23 – rip snorting good time!

24 May

Our good friend Lori spent the whole day up at NE with Sam and me today, so you know we had a rip snorting good time!  Lori and I stopped in at a great grocery/nursery/bakery store on the way to NE to pick up some delectable treats for Sam.   It took us so long to pick out our food that Sam’s OT was already in session by the time we got there.  No matter, we quickly joined right in.    We reached into our bag of goodies and picked out some great food for Lefty to reach for.  The healthy Apple Chips did not get rave reviews (although I liked them) but the local strawberries were juicy, sweet and well worth Sam’s effort.  Next up was the Buffalo Wings.    Okay, so I probably couldn’t have picked a messier food…. They were really hard for Sam to pick up with Lefty – slippery devils were they.  But he loved them!!  By the time Sam was done snacking and then trying to clean off the buffalo sauce, OT was over.  So we headed back up to Sam’s room to chill before lunch.

Sam was pretty tired at that point so we decided to eat lunch early in his room so he could lay down for his nap earlier than normal.  Well at least that was the plan….  But then we got to smack talking.   The talking led to hysterical laughing.  Sam laughed so hard at one point that he couldn’t swallow the food in his mouth fast enough.  Let’s just say it wasn’t pretty!  We finally did get Sam down for his nap – and Lori and I left the room so we all didn’t start laughing again.

After Sam’s nap we all went outside until it was time for PT.  Sam was certainly out to impress his cheerleader.  First he practiced standing and sitting.  He worked hard.  Then with his Therapist’s guidance, Sam walked the entire length of the parallel bars, forwards and then backwards!  Everyone in the gym stopped what they were doing to watch and then loudly cheered his accomplishment.  Sam tried to look humble, but he glowed with pride.  After that Sam needed to rest a bit.  It was exhausting work!  After some brief stretching, Sam’s Therapist got him in the Argo Walker so he could stroll around the room.  The Therapist blocked Sam’s knee and corrected his foot position when needed, but Sam was able to push the Argo Walker forward on his own for the first time.  Dang, but he looked good!!  The last walk did him in – he was ready to rest.

After a quick but hearty dinner, Sam was beyond ready to be put into bed.  When Sam prayed before we left, he thanked God for all the people who support him and asked that he be able to work just as hard tomorrow as he did today.  I second that prayer!!  What a great day.

I was curious about the Argo Walker that you mentioned so I went a googlin’ and found the Argo Medical Technologies website. There is a fascinating product called ReWalk – essentially a strap-on robotic exo-skeleton which provides standup mobility for a paraplegic. Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, but I am guessing that this is not the walker that Sam uses. Still – worth a look:

A little more searching turned up another device. ARGO is an acronym for Active Reciprocated Gait Orthosis. Think of four outrigger wheels to prevent toppling, with the user in the middle, supported by an upright stanchion. It appears that an adjustable amount of weight support is possible – I can’t tell if there is a saddle or if the weight is supported by a strap at the waist. Each leg then has an ankle strap with a bungee or strap that assists with the forward movement of the leg during each stride. There are some other doohickeys and it all seems to be computer controlled. If you get a mind’s eye picture of one of those flying saucer play tables that we all put our kids in while they scooted around, you wouldn’t be too far off – just a lot more serious looking and no cool spinny wheels or beepy things. Here’s a vid of one in action:

I’ve got no idea if either of these wonderful techs is the one that Sam uses, but, it is very very heartening to imagine Sam up and mobile and free from that $%^&* chair. Work it, Sam! You’re making great progress!

      Hey Bob,
The ARGO you mention in the 2nd paragraph is used frequently at NCSC- often when I am leaving late at night there will be a therapist or 2 with a neighbor working out on the ARGO up and down the long center hall of NCSC, very slowly. Seasoned visitors will stop, observe, and offer encouragement, congrats, or applause.
Spinny wheels and cool beepy things are available, but at additional cost. The more resourceful of us make our own beepy noises.
We have looked into the Re-Walk. Very expensive and not widely available. But its really cool. Maybe if Sam decides on an Everest climb, it would be good PR….

My bad. It’s not an ARGO walker. It’s an ARJO. Different beast. Sorry

What a joyous sight to behold , to be able to see Sam taking steps forward and backward, so proud of that boy !! Keep it up Sam , you’ll be outta there in no time ( and doing the running man for me )!! ♥

Go ahead Kath, you can say it. I made us late with my inability to chose with the overwhelming selections I was faced with in the bakery section !!

p.s. I’m sure Sam will appreciate your second paragraph when he sees it !! (giving away our secrets ) LOL !!!

Food and laughter makes for great fun… I recall peas and a little milk shooting out of my nose once. Keep on movin’ Sam… up down and all around and perhaps a little lefty and shake him all about! xoxox
