Our good friend Lori spent the whole day up at NE with Sam and me today, so you know we had a rip snorting good time! Lori and I stopped in at a great grocery/nursery/bakery store on the way to NE to pick up some delectable treats for Sam. It took us so long to pick out our food that Sam’s OT was already in session by the time we got there. No matter, we quickly joined right in. We reached into our bag of goodies and picked out some great food for Lefty to reach for. The healthy Apple Chips did not get rave reviews (although I liked them) but the local strawberries were juicy, sweet and well worth Sam’s effort. Next up was the Buffalo Wings. Okay, so I probably couldn’t have picked a messier food…. They were really hard for Sam to pick up with Lefty – slippery devils were they. But he loved them!! By the time Sam was done snacking and then trying to clean off the buffalo sauce, OT was over. So we headed back up to Sam’s room to chill before lunch.
Sam was pretty tired at that point so we decided to eat lunch early in his room so he could lay down for his nap earlier than normal. Well at least that was the plan…. But then we got to smack talking. The talking led to hysterical laughing. Sam laughed so hard at one point that he couldn’t swallow the food in his mouth fast enough. Let’s just say it wasn’t pretty! We finally did get Sam down for his nap – and Lori and I left the room so we all didn’t start laughing again.
After Sam’s nap we all went outside until it was time for PT. Sam was certainly out to impress his cheerleader. First he practiced standing and sitting. He worked hard. Then with his Therapist’s guidance, Sam walked the entire length of the parallel bars, forwards and then backwards! Everyone in the gym stopped what they were doing to watch and then loudly cheered his accomplishment. Sam tried to look humble, but he glowed with pride. After that Sam needed to rest a bit. It was exhausting work! After some brief stretching, Sam’s Therapist got him in the Argo Walker so he could stroll around the room. The Therapist blocked Sam’s knee and corrected his foot position when needed, but Sam was able to push the Argo Walker forward on his own for the first time. Dang, but he looked good!! The last walk did him in – he was ready to rest.
After a quick but hearty dinner, Sam was beyond ready to be put into bed. When Sam prayed before we left, he thanked God for all the people who support him and asked that he be able to work just as hard tomorrow as he did today. I second that prayer!! What a great day.
